CHRISTINA NICOLA: TENTATRICE NOIR

March 18 - April 29, 2023

PRESS RELEASE

Salon Lumane presents the multimodal experience of the essence of subliminal
intimacy of afro-romanticist Christina Nicola.

In Tentatrice Noir, Nicola playfully engages in the powerplay of allure. The six life-sized sensuous paper cutouts from Nicola’s series “200 Little Deaths” are gestures of self-performative joy that embody the essence of femininity. These works are a meditation on the mercuriality of the black femme identity. Inspired by the expression “Le Petit Mort” or “the little death,” this series challenges the lenses through which society engages the black femme identity.

Nicola renders the depths of desire with a soft-spoken invitation into intimate quarters. The works of ink and pearl on paper portray sexually charged imagery of the fantasies of consensual capitulation.

BIOGRAPHY

Christina Nicola's (B.1993) signature Afro-romantic aesthetic is a dance between a delicate vulnerability and latent seduction in her drawings, paintings, and sculptures. Nicola’s artistic practice is a haven for femme-identifying persons to de/construct themselves.

Nicola holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Central Florida and has consistently exhibited in galleries and art fairs in Florida, Tennessee, and New York. Nicola currently works between her Miami and New York studios. As 2022 marks a return to exhibiting consistently, Nicola most recently participated in the Phillips’ exhibition, Arrangements in Black. This private sales exhibition featured over two dozen promising black contemporary artists.
